Francisco Custodio

Francisco Custodio

In 1915, at the age of 15, Francisco left the small island of São Miguel, Açores in search of a better life in the United States. There he apprenticed with a photographer before returning to his home town of Rabo De Peixe. Embracing his love for photography, Francisco then decided to open a portrait studio—the only one of it's kind at the time.

Things were much different then. Cameras and supplies were extremely difficult to come by. Francisco was determined to grow his business and made due with what he could build on his own, using the natural resources that were available to him. As the year's went by, Francisco's children became increasingly involved with the business. They later immigrated to Canada and started their very own portrait studio in Toronto—"Custodio".
